University Recruitment is looking for highly self-directed people to assume these technical roles and immediately contribute to the development of our newest storage products.  We’re seeking highly motivated students to be a part of our RAMP program.  These paid summer internship opportunities are designed to jump start your career, offering on-the-job training and a robust summer of events.  As a RAMP participant, you'll work alongside technology industry professionals on real-world projects, giving you the tools and experience to get your career off the ground.  Additionally, Ramp participants will attend networking events, participate in workshops, and present to the WD leadership team.


  • Current student, pursuing a PhD degree in Material Science/Chemistry, Physics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, or Data Analytics, and graduating between December 2018 and June 2019
  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong technical skills in area of study
  • Interest in HDD, flash, semiconductor, components, nonvolatile memory industry
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong team-player who can collaborate with colleagues

Student must have had exposure (classroom work at a minimum) in chemistry/chemical reactions, thermodynamics, physical properties of materials, structure/property relationships, and transport properties (diffusion, fluid mechanics, etc.).  Ideally the student would have hands-on experience with wet chemistry/organic chemistry, analytical laboratory equipment, and a thorough understanding of the differences between equilibrium, steady state, and transient phenomenon in chemistry.


This assignment in the Materials Science / Chemical Integration lab will cover various aspects of how the chemical and materials environment of hard-disk drives affect their performance and reliability.  Working with engineers in our Materials Lab team, the successful candidate will utilize a combination of analytical techniques (e.g., GC-MS, NMR, particle size analysis, and multiple proprietary methods) to evaluate organic chemical absorption, particle filtration, humidity change, and trace contamination in Hard Disk Drive devices and components.  The summer time period will be a critical development phase for several products and projects, and the intern will contribute to the timely success of product qualification.
